Alternative methods of exchange
For That Art Exhibits, Sarah Kate Wilson will present a paper that takes as its focus painting practices that mobilize the audience through participation. Ultimately these practices bring painting into a social realm and promote a triangular-relationship between artist, artwork and audience.
Artists often established these relationships through alternative methods of exchange, such as gifting, employing contractual agreements, using a service economy rather than goods economy, through collaboration and custodial care. Using her work and the work of other painters, Wilson will address these methods, and discuss, the complex and messy exchanges that occur when this triangular relationship is triggered and sustained over time.
