Tactics of Display: Allan Sekula’s Ship of Fools / The Dockers’ Museum
This presentation, conceived in two parts, focuses on the discrete modes of display at stake in Allan Sekula’s final, unfinished work: Ship of Fools / The Dockers’ Museum. A first part offers a speculative reading of Sekula’s so-called “Mining Section (Bureau des mines)”, provisionally on view at Leuven’s Anatomical Theater. Taking into consideration the spatial logic of this historic site, re-fashioned in the late nineteenth century to house Constantin Meunier’s studio, the proposed display – connected to an adjacent room as temporary storage – is, for the most part, composed of ‘unpositioned material’ (objets inédits) from the artist’s museum, tentatively articulated here within a first research presentation. These point to and extend from Sekula’s “Bureau of Mines,” both formally and thematically, via cross- and inter-sections, while re-instigating Sekula’s dialog with his predecessor. A second part, will be held in situ.
